From Shoots to Roots: revealing the above and below ground structure of meadow plants
Vicky Bowskill and Irina Tatarenko from the Floodplain Meadows Partnership have been busy during lockdown. They have published this ‘Shoots to Roots’ botanical art showing some of the plants which grow in North Meadow.
Before the wide availability of digital cameras a botanists sketch book was the best way of recording the intricate characteristics of individual plants. Many of these records are so accurate and detailed that they are regarded as Botanical Art.
Digital cameras are very good and extremely convenient, but they do not show the characteristics of a plant as completely and accurately as a drawing. The plant root systems, normally hidden from our view, are beautifully revealed by this drawing.
