VE Day 80th Anniversary

On 8th May 2025, the country marked the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day, celebrating 80 years of peace since the end of Word War II. The High Bailiff of Cricklade Court Leet invited residents of Cricklade to a  celebration marking the occasion at Saxons Rest on Thursday 8th May at 8.30pm.

The programme featured The Cricklade Band and Sing 4/4 Community Choir, an act of remembrance by the Royal British Legion and readings by Court Leet Members . The evening concluded with the lighting of the beacon.

The event was a great success and was enjoyed by a large crowd of Cricklade residents.

Report from the Ale Taster

One of the officers of the Court is the Ale Taster who’s duty is to periodically report on the quality of the ale served in Cricklade. On the 14th November our Ale Taster carried out his duties and took with him a fellow officer the Carner. The Carner’s duty is to report on the quality of the meat served in Cricklade.

 

The Court’s Officers duly reported as follows:

ALE TASTING WITH THE CARNER  14 NOVEMBER 2024

A ‘mini’ ale tasting was held on 14 November 2024. All establishments in the town had been visited by the Ale taster or his cohorts over the previous two years and the phrase t’is a goodly ale’ had been heard on many an occasion. The brews served in this ‘Loco Delicioso’ were deemed to be of a most satisfactory standard.

This tasting was arranged as a prelude to a fine meal at Jicsaw Thai restaurant where the Carner ‘designate’ conducted his first duty presenting Yudt, Sassy and the  team with a certificate declaring Jicsaw fit for purpose to prepare and provide excellent food for consumption by the people of the Borough of Cricklade.

Coronation Concert and Picnic

Our Coronation Concert and Picnic was a great success. About 400 people enjoyed the Cricklade Band Concert in the unexpectedly fine weather.

We are very fortunate in Cricklade to have such talented musicians in the Cricklade  Band to enable us to celebrate important events like the Coronation in such an enjoyable way.

Lots of people brought a picnic to enjoy while watching members of the Court Leet light the beacon.

Court Leet Coronation Mugs

Cricklade Court Leet members visited St Sampson’s School, Cricklade Preschool Playgroup and Thames Playgroup this week. The Court is giving every child up to the age of 11, who lives in Cricklade, a Coronation Mug to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6th May 2023.

Some of the children had made amazingly colourful crowns and it was very enjoyable to celebrate this historic event with them, and to give them a small memento to mark the occasion.

Cricklade Children to get Coronation Mugs

King Charles III Coronation

As part of the Celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles III, the Court are presenting all children aged up to 11 who live in Cricklade a commemorative mug.

Children attending St Sampsons School and both the Playgroups will be given their mugs beforehand, so you need to take no action.

However, any parent of a child who is not covered by these arrangements as they attend different schools outside of Cricklade (or none) is asked to contact the Steward via our contact page as soon as possible giving the child’s name, age, address, and the school they attend so we can reserve a mug for you.

You will then be asked to call at the Town Council office on Monday 8th May between 10 and 12 to receive their commemorative mugs. The office will be open specifically for this purpose.
