Bumblebee Identification Course 14th May 2022

Red Tail Bumblebee Queen

Bumblebees are familiar and much-loved insects that pollinate our crops and wildflowers. This course is for beginners who would like to learn more about lifecycle of these charismatic insects. Unlike the honeybee, bumblebees do not make honey, as they do not need to store food for winter. Instead, the season’s new queens hibernate and emerge to found their own nests in the spring. There are currently 24 species of bumblebee resident in Britain.

You will learn how to identify the 7 most widespread species all of which are found on North Meadow NNR. The red tailed bumblebee queen (above) is the main pollinator of the rare Snakes Head Fritillary  which blooms in great numbers on North Meadow in April each year.

Location: Jenner Hall Cricklade with site visit to North Meadow NNR
